Winter Training has begun!

November 26, 2018

Winter training has begun and we're thrilled to have so many athletes back and ready to rock. We will have our trainer Amy Wild back again this winter as well as the weight room, ergs, physioballs and all of our favorite toys. Attend as much as you can, stay in shape and have a great winter!

Hungry Eagle Sprints, Saturday 2/23

February 19, 2019

Huron rowers will compete in the Hungry Eagle Sprints on Saturday, February 23rd at Skyline High School. Come down and cheer on our team as they race rowers from across the state on rowing machines. Spring Season Announcement

February 21, 2019

Spring season begins March 11! Practice is held 5:15-7:30, Monday - Friday. We’ll meet at Huron in the Dungeon until the weather has settled, then move to the boathouse. We all want to be on the water!

Ready to Join Huron Crew this Spring? New to the team? While we’re still finalizing dues and other details for the season there are a few things you can do to get started and connected with us:

  • Navigate to the "Join Crew" tab at the top of this page

  • Click on the "New Rower" box

  • Complete all items except dues. Please complete everything by March 11. Dues for new rowers must be paid by March 29. (Some financial assistance is available – complete the form as soon as possible.  See the About Us tab -> Documents and Forms.)

  • Read about our Points system. There will be a team meeting for parents and students in the first two weeks of practice and we’ll explain more and answer questions. They’re easier to earn than you might guess and you’ll be providing much needed support for the team.

If you’d like to join us before the official start of the season, come on down to our Winter Training sessions until then. Girls practice 4:30-6:00 and boys 5:30-7:00 every weekday except Wednesday. On Wednesday we welcome Amy Wilds for an intense fun training session for everyone, 5:30-6:45. Come one day a week or all five. Get a start on fitness and rowing technique!

ROW RATS!

Culver

May 18, 2018

Culver is a nice way to bring the whole team together, close up our season and enjoy our seniors for one last race. The race involves an early morning rise and a trip across the state to Culver Indiana on Lake Maxinkuckee. There, we raced teams from Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, earned lots of medals and had lots of fun. Here's to a great season and a happy summer to come.

Midwest!

May 12, 2018

The Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships draw the best competition from all over the Midwest and serves as the selection regatta for Nationals. The events progress from heats on Saturday morning to semi-finals on Saturday afternoon and finally to grand finals on Sunday. This year, weather forced delays on Saturday afternoon and caused some finals to be seeded directly from the heats.  The change caused some boats to be knocked out of the competition early and some to advance without a semi-final, but our rowers raced well and ended up making it to finals in 10 events on Sunday. Our placements included second, third, fourth and fifth place finishes with the Huron Women's Novice Lightweight 4+ earning a bronze medal and the Greenhills Women's Junior 2x earning a silver! The regatta requires big, full days with early mornings and late nights and a heroic effort by regatta support to feed and organize the whole team for three full days. Well done to all!

Wyandotte

May 05, 2018

What started as a beautiful, sunny day turned into rough one when the wind lined up against the full force of the Detroit River. White caps, chop, and a swamped boat forced crews back to shore after only a couple of heats. The regatta stalled for an hour delay and eventually canceled when conditions did not improve. Huron packed up the whole trailer, carpooled home and re-rigged for Monday. Better luck next time!

Grand Rapids on the Grand

April 28, 2018

Huron raced the current, wind and another round of great competition on the west side of the state last Saturday on the Grand River.  We raced teams from Forest Hills Central, Forest Hills Northern, Rockford, Northview, Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Anthony Wayne, Spring Lake, Crystal Lake, and Alliance.  All squads had solid performances with first place finishes for the Women's Novice 8+, Men's Novice 8+, the Men's Varsity 4+, the Women's Junior 8+, the Men's Varsity 8+ and the Men's Novice Light 4+ which competed in the Varsity Light 4+ event!  The Men won the overall team trophy and the Women took second. Well done all!

Spring at last at Floodtown

April 21, 2018

Saturday finally came together with warm temperatures and great racing conditions at Skyline's Floodtown Regatta at Concordia. We raced Skyline, Northville, Greater Dayton, Saline, Cranbrook, Perrysburg, Central St. Francis, and DWRA.  It was great to finally get on the water and get some high quality racing in. We made many finals and placed well including first place finishes for the Women's Novice 4+, the Men's Junior 4+, the Men's Varsity 4+, the Men's and Women's 3rd Varsity 8+'s, and the Men's Varsity 8+.  Special thanks goes out to our parents and new regatta support teams. Well done all! (Photo by Carlos Perez)

Opening Race Moves Indoors

April 07, 2018

Our first Saturday practice race was unfortunately pushed indoors due to weather, but rowers made the best of it, racing 1000 meter pieces on the rowing machines in heats throughout the morning. Parents also showed up in force to attend our first annual regatta support training session. The rowers raced hard, the parents learned a lot and everyone went home with pancakes in their bellies. Not a bad start after all! Thanks to Francine and the regatta support training crew for setting it all up.

100' Challenge

March 03, 2018

A big thank you to rowers and parents who came down for the 100' Challenge yesterday. Rowers formed relay teams with partners, trying to get as many meters as possible within 100 minutes. We crushed our distance goal, rowing a total of 357,428 meters, or the equivalent distance to our end-of-season regatta in Culver, IN. It was a fun event with great energy & teamwork! Parents got on the rowing machines at the end to try their luck.

Thank you to rowers, parents, snack contributors, and event coordinators (Emma, Makala and Terah). Well done all.

Huron Rowers Race at the Hungry Eagle Sprints

February 24, 2018

Nineteen rowers took part in the Hungry Eagle Erg Sprints at Skyline, racing against athletes from 12 other programs.  Eleven novices and eight varsity all pulled solid times, most achieving personal bests.

Adam Campain had the fastest time of the day and won the gold medal in the boys openweight category.  Haley Campain took home first place and the gold medal in the freshmen girls race.  Nice day for the Campain family!  Coxswain Samantha Chan deserves a special shout-out for her participation in the open coxswain race: she was an inspiration to us all.

I am proud of what our athletes accomplished yesterday.  Those parents attending saw up close just how difficult this racing is.

Thanks to all who attended, viewed, and coached.

Coach Mike
